‘Amr Ibn ‘Abasah said:
During the times of Al-Jaahiliyyah (ignorance), I knew that the people were upon misguidance and that they were not upon anything, for they used to worship idols. Then I heard of a man in Makkah who was receiving revelation. So I set out on my camel, however at that time, the Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) was in hiding due to oppression of his people. Thus, I moved around inconspicuously until I was able gain access to him in Makkah.
I asked him, “What are you?” He replied, “I am a Prophet.”
Therefore I asked, “What is a Prophet?”
He replied, “Allaah has sent me as a Messenger.”
So I asked, “What is it that He has sent you with?”
He replied, “I have been sent to maintain the ties of kinship and to break the idols, so that Allaah is worshipped alone and nothing at all is associated in worship along with Him.”
Therefore, I asked, “Who is with you upon this?”
He replied, “A free man and a slave.”
He (‘Abee Umamah) said that at that time Abu Bakr and Bilaal were with him from those who believed. I said, “I shall follow you.” He told me, “You are not able to do so at this time, do you not see my situation and the situation of the people? Return to your family, and when you hear that I have become triumphant, come back to me.”
When I returned to my family, the Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) arrived in Al-Madeenah, however I remained with my family seeking information and asking people about the situation of the Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم). Then when a group of people from Al-Madeenah came, I asked them, “What happened to this man who came to Al-Madeenah?” They replied, “The people are hastening to (i.e. welcoming) him, whilst his people want to kill him however they failed and he came to Al-Madeenah.” Hence, I headed towards Al-Madeenah and I met him, so I asked, “O messenger of Allaah, do you recognize me?” He said, “Yes, you are the one whom I met in Makkah.” I said, “Of course.” I said to him, “O prophet of Allaah tell me what Allaah has taught you and I do not know, tell me about the salaah....” Muslim (1/386)

From the benefits of the hadeeth of ‘Amr Ibn ‘Abasah:
ReplyDelete1.The fact that the hideousness of shirk is something that is ingrained in the fitrah based on his statement, “During the times of Al-Jaahiliyyah (ignorance), I knew that the people were upon misguidance and that they were not upon anything, for they used to worship idols.”
2.The zeal to seek 'ilm for it is the reason for all that is good based on his statement,”Then I heard of a man in Makkah who was receiving revelation. So I set out on my camel, however at that time, the Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) was in hiding due to oppression of his people. Thus, I moved around inconspicuously until I was able gain access to him.”
3.His question, “I asked him, “What are you?” He replied, “I am a Prophet.” Therefore I asked, “What is a Prophet?” He replied, “Allaah has sent me as a Messenger.” This matter is the foundation of all knowledge, and this matter should be understood very well; that Allaah sent Messengers to you. Hence, once you are aware of this, the following matter becomes easy to understand.
4.His question, “What is it that He has sent you with?” He said such and such. This statement clarifies the previous statement by practical application.
5.His statement, “I have been sent to maintain the ties of kinship and to break the idols, so that Allaah is worshipped alone and nothing at all is associated in worship along with Him.” The first matter being the rights of the creation, and the second matter being the rights of Allaah. By mentioning these two matters simultaneously, this illustrates the manner in which to invite a person by showing him gentleness and kindness whereby it would enable the truth to enter their hearts. And secondly, this illustrates the importance of knowing about a matter before getting involved in it, for a person cannot be steadfast upon a matter except by having knowledge of it, even if it is difficult.
6.The excellent understanding of 'Amr by him asking, “Who is with you upon this?”
