The role of the Alawis in bringing Sufism to Hadramaut
The Alawis
of Iraqi origin who fled to Hadramaut are considered the first planters of the
seed of Sufism into Hadrami soil. Upon leaving Iraq they were Imami shi’ah with
sufi influences as is documented in the
books of history. The Alawis upon arrival in Hadramaut moved frequently between the towns and cities of hadramaut
until ultimately alighting in Tarim and taking it as a base. Due to their
prophetic bloodline they eventually
ousted the scholarly families of the region and landed their position of
prestige.
The
early Alawis were not known for scholastic activities including their
forefather Ahmad ibn Ibn ‘Isa al-muhajir who reached Hadramaut in the year 319
a.h. , the only scholastic mention being that of his son ‘Ubaid’s time in
Makkah in which he studied the book Qut al-Qulub at the hands of its author Abu
Talib Al-Makki . He did this while on Hajj in the year 377 a.h.
Within
the personality of of Al-muhajir the
connection between Sufism and Shi’ism becomes undeniably clear . Ahmad ibn ‘Isa
al-muhajir and Imami shi’ite as multiple historians have mentioned two of whom
are Alawis themselves.
