What were socks like at the time of the Prophet?
Recently read shaykh Al-Albaani's book on the permissibility of wiping over socks and shortly after got into a number of discussions with Hanafis on the issue. After discussing with a notable hanafi fiqh teacher from Baltimore we both agreed that it is the opinion of Abu Yusuf and Muhammad ibn Hasan as well as Abu Haneefah himself that you can wipe over your sock just as it is permissible to wipe over the khuff. The difference though is that his opinion is that the socks of the time of the Prophet Sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam were very different than those of today, they were water proof and one could walk in them for at least 3 miles. Personally I find this rather unlikely and would love if there were any historical evidence for exactly what type of socks they wore at the time. This is what I found. Anyone knowledgeable about the topic both the fiqh or history angles is more than welcome to contact me.
