Islam has been built upon five fundamental principles:
1) Guarding & protecting the Deen.
2) The protection of all human life and it is for this reason that the requital punishment of a life for a life was Islamically legislated.
3) The Intellect and safeguarding it by flogging the perpetrator who drinks alcoholic beverages, as it consequently diminishes the faculty of reasoning, comprehension and judgement.
4) Safeguarding one’s wealth [and upholding the right of ownership], and it is for this reason that the chopping off of the hands has been Islamically legislated for crime of theft so that it may be not be committed.
5) Respecting the honour and dignity of individuals. Lashing the slanderer for wrongful accusations or for slandering a chaste person [of illicit sexual intercourse] was therefore Islamically legislated so that it can be used as a safeguard against such actions.
